Today we sat down with Melissa Brown, HR/Org Dev Director for VSG. Melissa's background has allowed her to develop new ways of handling employee development, and has quickly become a key contributor to bettering the overall employee experience, here at VSG. Her ability to bring new ideas to the table and work a comprise, to many difficult decisions, has made her an integral part of our team. It's employees like Melissa that make Rotary Lift what is is today. Take a few minutes to meet Melissa, one of Rotary’s Force Behind the Lift.
Q: How long have you been with Rotary Lift?
Melissa: Almost two years.
Q: What do you enjoy about your job?
Melissa: The variety of people; everyone at Rotary has a different, and an important story to tell — I never get tired of hearing them. The dedication of the Rotary employees is second to none.
Q: What is your background in human resources?
Melissa: I have been working in human resources since 1992, mostly in organizational design and development. I have spent the majority of my career helping organizations work better and smarter, and teaching leaders to lead. I have managed various HR functions in my past, such as compliance and recruiting, however this is my first opportunity to manage a complete HR team.
Q: What is one thing about working in human resources that people may not know?
Melissa: That we wear many, many hats. We are in the businesses of recruitment, benefit management, payroll, compensation, training, wellness, employee and leadership development, organizational design, event planning, and communication. We also have days when we are full-time counselors. Most of our business is on demand — employees needing real time solutions — and rarely does anyone walk in the door to tell us everything is awesome.
Q: During your work career or personal life what are you most proud of?
Melissa: I am most proud when I can coach someone, so that they are empowered to tackle and resolve some issue in their world. I strive to make everything I encounter a tiny bit better; it doesn’t have to be a lot, incremental change is great.
Q: What is one fun fact about you that people may not know?
Melissa: I love sailing – my dad, my brother and I raced every Sunday when I was growing up. I didn’t know how much I missed it until I met John, and he had a sailboat…. We plan to buy a 36 foot sailboat and spend half the year on it when we retire.
Q: What do you enjoy doing in your time away from work?
Melissa: Riding motorcycles, driving cars, sailing or driving boats, walking, exploring, really anything that involves activity. I am not very good at just sitting around.
Q: Are you a music person or a sports person?
Melissa: That one is tough. I don’t play sports, but I love my football. There is always music playing, but I don’t go to concerts.
Q: If you purchased one Rotary Lift product what would it be? Why?
Melissa: It would be a Rotary Lift Low Rise Lift. It is the perfect size for my garage.
